Obama's Latest Mideast Folly

Barack Obama, like so many American presidents before him, still clings to the pathetic illusion that the Middle East "peace process" is viable policy instead of a delusional chimera.  Concerned that the recent killing of Osama Bin Laden, shows U.S. "insensitivity" to Islamist sensitivities, Obama has now decided to resurrect the insidious beast of "solving" the Israeli-Palestinean dispute.  In a recent speech, Obama succumbed to the folly perpetrated by generations of Palestinean revanchists and many sectors of the international diplomatic community by proclaiming that is was now U.S. policy for Israel to revert to its pre-June 1967 borders as an esssential prerequisite to achieving peace.

Under pressure from the United States and international community, Israel has already surrendered the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, and portions of the West Bank to Egypt and the euphemistic "Palestinean territory" and is no closer to actual peace and security than Charlie Sheen is to sobriety.  So much of the world refuses to accept the reality that the preponderance of the Arab world is not interested in peaceful and harmonious coexistence with Israel, but seeks to destroy the Mideast's only true democracy and America's only genuine ally in that contentious region of the world.  Textbooks in Arab schools proclaim that Israel is an illegitimate nation, promote the most insidious blood libels about Israel and Jews, and believe that Palestineans are entitled to a fictional "right of return" to homelands they surrendered in 1948.  The only way there will be peace in that part of the world is when neighboring countries accept the unequivocal reality that divine providence has given Israel that land and quit clinging to Islamist and secular fantasies that Israel is somehow illegitimate and that the Palestineans are the moral equivalents of the U.S. civil rights movement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has correctly pointed out that Israel cannot militarily defend itself from its borders as they existed prior to the 6 days war of 1967.   The unpleasant realities of Arab revanchist sentiment and Israel's vulnerability to Islamist terrorism are ably pointed out by writers such as Caroline Glick http://www.carolineglick.com/
Yet Barack Obama, in his desire to make his place in history, has decided to let himself be seduced by the illusion of a broad Middle East peace settlement without realizing that such a settlement will endanger Israel's security, damage our own multifaceted security interests and credibility in that region, and further embolden Western leftist and Islamist opponents of Israel and the increasing growth of anti-Jewish sentiment being expressed in the West more openly during anytime since the advent of Nazi Germany.  Proponents of Palestinean statehood hope to get a United Nations resolution proclaiming an "independent" state for this geographic expression sometime this fall.  Obama's foolish pandering to such sentiment is a slap in the face to our stalwart Israeli allies and makes it more likely we will foolishly allow it to happen.  Given the increasing likelihood that a more Islamist government will emerge in Egypt later this year, which would drastically increase the possibility of another large-scale Arab-Israeli war, do we really want to be on the side of Islamist thugs?

Hopefully, our Congress will have the courage to thwart Obama's Islamist sycophancy and reassure Israel of our eternal commitment to its prosperity and survival and that we will crush any attempts to endanger Israeli national security by succumbing to the illusions offered by the Middle East peace process for the past six decades.
